A significant number of aging wells tend to have problems at Christmas when the family is over and an already aging system that is under stress.  It usually starts with a day or two of heavy water use, then the water turns silty and dark. The well does not recharge as it had previously and with continued use, the casing finally cracks, and water slows to a stop.  This often leaves little to no water for toilets and often not enough for a shower.  This type of event can really put a damper on the festivities. 

Winter is especially hard on some shallow aquifers. This is because winter is cold and there is no liquid precipitation recharging aquifers. Quite often during winter, wells that rely on shallow aquifers tend to slow pump rates.  Be aware, this may not change till the water in the aquifer becomes more plentiful.

Draught is another time of well stress. This does not constitute well failure, rather is simply a reflection of the aquifer’s hydraulic pressure. Wells that struggle during draught are not alone. Generally, draught is not localized so many wells may struggle.  It is best to keep in mind that shallow targets are more susceptible and as the draught passes, the reliability of the well often improves.
