Water Well Contamination

Water Well Contamination

On the prairies, wells supply the primary water source for Canadian rural agriculture.  A well is designed to move water through an aquifer of sand and gravel to the surface.  However, it can be a pathway for contamination to follow the surface to the aquifer. Every precaution should be taken by a well driller to prevent this from happening and to ensure that drilling fluid, drilling rig, pipe, casing, well screens, and pumps are clean, and the annulus is grouted with a tremie line from surface to the formation.

The reality is, many drilling companies currently operating in Saskatchewan are unable or not interested in grouting properly. Pressurized grouting is an important and key part of water well drilling.  Decommission of old wells require the same care as maintaining the integrity of the aquifer for future generations and eliminating the safety risk of the old well creating a cavern over time that can threaten human and animal life.  No one wants their child to be the next toddler that has fallen in an old well.
