Municipal water supplies are multi-dwelling communities that rely on a single water source. Communities have a right and responsibility to spend public money wisely to ensure that each dollar stretches as far as possible as it comes out of the pockets and purse of its community members.
For communities that are currently seeking tenders for a new community water well project, a suggestion would be to tender all parts of all jobs. You will get your best competitive value-added rate by opening work to all tenders.
For municipalities, try to tender the work yourself if you can so you can be sure it is done properly. As the owner of the project you always have the final decision. Example: If you are looking at New Well(s), Water Plan Upgrade, Raw Water Intake, Water Plant Facility. Your best dollar spent is to divide the work and tender each part as then you can control each variable and costs by having input over who the subcontractors are. To be more specific some drillers have higher rates for municipal wells than domestic wells - even if the process is the same or similar. This cost can be 3 to 5 times higher than domestic rates. Why spend the extra $30,000 or $80,000 on drilling if it is not required? Keep the money in your community’s and/or invest the delta in other areas for the public.
Now let’s consider the additional costs of installing the pump system, some companies like ours, can and do install our own pump systems at a further discounted rate because we are familiar with that well already. Now consider that a 4-inch pump can pump up to 100 gal per minute, and your community rate needs 40 or 60 gal per min in a 12 hour period, this 4-inch pump can fit in a 6 inch well just as well as an 8 inch well. Now consider that 8-inch wells are often 3x the cost of 6-inch wells.
