SASK WATER ISSUES

Sask Water issues and some key stressors for Saskatchewan’s groundwater and surface water quality ( and quantity ) includes water consumption. In this type of stressor, we may see long pipelines of water pumped from river and lake systems to feed homes and acreages 100’s of km from the actual source. This requires specific management plans such as trickle lines for home and acreages along the way. In some cases, this costly application is not required as the area may have viable groundwater aquifers that are separate from the surface water sources. This means that one can alleviate the stress of diverting precious scarce surface water sources to the specific areas that require water with no or limited access to ground aquifers. Water quality and quantity of surface water sources can be nutrient-loaded. This requires close monitoring and testing to ensure the water remains safe for humans and animals to use. Cattle can go blind and suffer from health issues from poor sources of water.

Saskatchewan agriculture does require the use of some water ( spraying and livestock care ). In reality, Saskatchewan crops are grown from rainwater and we have a limited amount of large irrigation systems as we may see in the USA. Large scale irrigation in areas of dry zones have and can cause aquifers to be mismanaged.

Saskatchewan has taken a different approach to groundwater management and the majority of our groundwater is intended for domestic use, agricultural and some industrial applications. Some special permitting is required for the later. The use of observation wells and monitored recording of wells to maintain the permit.

In many areas of Saskatchewan, dry, drought-like conditions have been the norm for the last number of years that is not the case in the north. Many of our northern communities are experiencing higher levels of stormwater and runoff entering their lakes and river tributaries. Excess water and runoff have its own set of problems. This can be also noted by the areas of Dead Moose Lake, The Quill Lakes, and in some aspects, even Last Mountain Lake. Due to seasonal changes areas that formally experienced drought may experience flooding periods.
