What To Ask When You Are Shopping For A Water Well Drilling Company

If your shopping for a water well drilling company it is important to understand what questions are important to ask? With many choices available to you - sometimes it can be overwhelming and confusing to narrow down your choices when doing your research. So as a consumer - where do you start and how do you know if you have found the right contractor to drill your well — for your area?

Well - Start by asking quality questions:

  • How does the contractor grout the well?

  • Is all fluid chlorinated, and how much do they use?

  • How big is the annulus?

  • What inside diameter of screens do they use?

  • Have they drilled in your area before and for whom ?

  • How long does it take to drill a well? (Hint: Look for how much time is spent drilling, jetting, airlifting, producing a well, well rest period and re-evaluation.)

  • Can they provide two clients’ names that you can speak with whose water well did not go according to plan? ( Tip: Seeing how a company addresses contracts that did not work out can be very telling.)

  • If your well goes dry in 5 yrs, is it still covered under warranty?

  • What caused the last two warranty problems and how were the problems resolved? How quick were they resolved?

  • Do they have materials on hand - or are they special order?

  • Where are your materials sourced? ( This way if a repair ever comes up, then parts can be sourced and you have not wasted money on oddball items that are obsolete.)

  • How old is their equipment? ( Drilling rig, elog, grout system)

  • Ask if the owner and driller are the same. ( Warranty and follow-up follows the person who completed the work and if the employee is no longer there, critical information can be lost and the facts may not be known.)

  • How do they determine the slot size of stainless steel screens? (Initial screening errors can cause long term problems that are difficult to resolve)

  • Do you or any of the employees have criminal records? (It should be the homeowner’s decision to decide who enters and works on the property.)

  • How long has the company been in business?

  • Are they insured and licensed to work in the province?

  • What happens if I am not available during the drilling process ?

  • What if your contractor can not locate a reliable water source? How much will you be on the hook for if unsuccessful 10 holes are drilled?

Quality questions go both ways.

Listen carefully to what questions they are asking you and how they conduct themselves. The best water well drilling contractor for you should be able to answer all questions regarding the design, construction, materials, drill process, safeguards, warranty, and service of your well - well past the installation date.

Remember: A well driller is working for you.
