Missing Home - Returning To Your Roots
There is an increasing trend of folks missing home - returning to your roots in Saskatchewan and rural living. There is no doubt that we are seeing people returning to former family land and rebuilding for their future. In many ways the discomforts of yesteryear are gone and people of today want modern luxuries like reliable power, water, heat and sewer. I personally don’t feel they are luxurious rather regular amenities. The reality is, in Saskatchewan rural living people often have to get create to need these needs. I often hear legends of old yard site having “amazing water that all the neighbours came around and hauled from”. This was a distinctive possibility in early settlement of Saskatchewan. The standard water usage was much less that today’s standard of water usage. I generally don’t give it a thought the numbers of loads of laundry I run in a day. I don’t worry about whether the garden is dry.... We water it. When water is hauled, or in situations where water sources are scarce, then people are much more aware of their water usage and water demand. Growing up here in Saskatchewan, we used a dugout where the water quality changed with the season. I have no intention of ever returning to the black smelly water of our dug out in summer and fall or the orange/yellow bubble baths in spring. I recall the dry years of the 80’s where the dugout line was high and dry, settled into the mud on a drying dugout bottom. I remember adding line and counting the last 3 feet of water in the dugout center that appeared V shaped with a stick. I remember praying for water not just for the crops, but water to take a bath. When we looked at acreages, I knew what I wanted to see. A nice wide 5 inch ID pvc casing and a well report with the well depth and production. I knew if it did not have a well, we planned to drill a well to a reliable target. I always advise clients to check with the Sask. Water Authority prior to purchasing land to inquire if any reliable targets possible lie beneath.
All in All - We love the acreage and acreage life. The quality of life we provide for the kids is distinctly different from city or town living. We have no regrets returning to our roots, traveling on the same grid roads we used on my childhood bus route.
